My son wished for a house. I decided his story could not end there.
The Calibrator’s open letter on housing, disability, lived experience and why pain must become something useful.
Dear public officials, researchers, practitioners and neighbours,
I am The Calibrator, founder of The Calibrator Project.
I am not writing from a boardroom or describing a distant problem. I am writing from lived experience of systems whose promises and real-world outcomes did not always meet.
A child’s wish for a home
There is one family memory I have chosen to share because it explains the question at the heart of this work. When I asked my son what he wanted, he said a dollhouse. He was not reaching for a particular toy. He was reaching for the idea of a home.
That moment made the limits of formal measurement impossible to ignore. Reports can count units, vacancies and wait times. They do not always reveal what uncertainty feels like inside a human life.
This public edition intentionally leaves the rest of my child’s and family’s private history out. Lived experience can guide the question without turning a private person into public evidence.
Why lived experience belongs at the table
Education, professional expertise, economic modelling, legal analysis and public administration all matter. Lived experience matters too. The people closest to a system can often see failure points that remain invisible from the outside.
That is why Calibrator asks what we are not measuring, who has not been heard and what evidence would change the next decision.
An invitation to build better
I am not asking anyone to accept every proposal. Read it. Challenge it. Test it. Improve it. Put qualified expertise against the assumptions and show what is missing.
Good public work combines different forms of knowledge and leaves a visible revision trail. It distinguishes a proposal from a prototype, a prototype from a pilot and a pilot from a proven result.
My story is one reason this work began. The larger mission is to give overlooked problems and practical ideas a fairer route to scrutiny, learning and responsible action.
I still believe change is possible. That is why I am writing, listening and building.

A little less juggling at home
The Family Control Centre brings family coordination into one app. An early version has been built and tested locally; the next step is learning how it fits real family routines.

A place for your ideas
We launched TimeToCalibrate.ca with dedicated project pages, The Calibrator’s public founder letter and a way to send ideas directly to the project. Explore the work, get in touch and find a practical way to contribute in one place.

Stories worth sharing
We created captioned short films, including “Who Is Missing From the Room?” and “Your Ideas Matter.” They bring the project’s central question to life: what do people closest to a problem see that everyone else misses?
